The senior rugby team played in the McMullen Cup for the first time ever on Monday, 23rd November at Gorey RFC. Although this was an exciting opportunity to play against a team in a higher division, it was clear that the motivation was to give a performance that was worthy of a place in this competition.
CBS Naas started the game strongly, putting pressure on the Carnew defence which resulted in a penalty, giving the visitors a 3-0 lead. The first half continued without much separating the two teams and by keeping the ball tight amongst the forwards, Keith Fanning managed to score a try, converted by Cian Hadden, giving a 7-3 lead at half time.
A strong start to the second half was crucial. CB worked up the pitch with strong ball carrying by Stanley Hadden, Joe Gardiner, Dylan Sawyer and Mark Hoare who broke through to score an important second try, 12-3. With fifteen minutes left and CBS Naas camped on the Carnew try line, it was a determined defence that kept the visitors out, and CB Carnew was a worthy winner with a final scoreline of 12-3. The squad is now looking forward to the next round of the McMullen Cup.
